The Underwater Steinway
A Story of Earthquakes and Recovery
When the 7.2 earthquake struck Christchurch in 2011, the Town Hall was tilted sideways with a drop of up to 6 meters. The Steinway D concert grand piano ended up in contaminated water up to its keys. There it stayed for 2 years, when the engineers finally allowed technician Wytze Hoekstra in to write a damage report, after which the piano was purchased by the Lund family and sent to piano rebuilder David Jenkin ARPT NZPTTG for a complete overhaul. Hear the whole dramatic story from David himself in the very venue where the piano first met its unfortunate fate.
David's presentation at the Convention will be accompanied by lots of photos of the restoration, plus a performance on the fully renewed grand piano.
